Week of 08/14 – 08/16
Wednesday 08/14
We are back in school! After the dry, boring reality of summer
vacation, with its long monotonous days, we finally find ourselves back in a
rigorous and engaging environment. We made it!
To start with, we will establish the goals of the class, explain
the AP Exam, define our mutual expectations, and establish some understanding of
classroom routines.
Next, we will go over the MLA format for essay writing, which
will be used for all writing assignments in this course.
Individual work: Each student will take notes on the MLA format,
which will be presented orally and visually by the instructor.
Group work: In small groups, students will compare their notes
(including their note taking styles) and refresh their memories on the
wonderful reality of the MLA format.
Finally, we will put your renewed knowledge to the test with an
MLA competition! Small groups will compete to answer questions about the MLA
format.
Summer assignments (essays on The
Great Gatsby) are DUE today.
Thursday 08/15
Group discussion: We will discuss how to “reverse engineer” our
summer essays, filling in the appropriate information on an AP essay planning
guide. This will function as a form of self-assessment, and students will use
the knowledge gained from this exercise to improve their essays. The rough
draft, second draft and essay planning guide will be DUE Friday 08/16, but in
honor of the awesomeness of my students, anyone needing an extension will
automatically receive on until Monday 08/19.
Individual work: With instructor assistance, each student will
fill out an AP essay planning guide using the essay generated for their summer
assignment.
Friday 08/16
We will hold a Socratic dialogue on The Great Gatsby. Each student will arrive with an opening question (correct
preparation for Socratic dialogue and development of opening questions will be
covered in class.)
Below you will find a link to the vocabulary terms for week one (the first complete week). A vocabulary quiz will take place each week for the remainder of the year, always on Wednesday. The first quiz, covering the terms below, will take place on Wednesday, 08/21. There is an additional link to the directions for AP vocabulary quizzes, which is quite specific and should be reviewed by every student.
