Statement of Educational Philosophy

I believe that everyone deserves direct access to a rigorous education, the better to understand the culture they live in, the world in its entirety, the history and development of human achievement, and most of all, themselves. It is my job as an educator to facilitate and empower this search, and to aid my students in the achievement of their greatest potential. I believe that every human being is endowed with both the ability and the desire to learn deeply, thoroughly and constantly. The educator must reach out to each student as an individual and find the unique way in which her or his mind works so that learning can occur in the classroom, and throughout life. For the process of education is only successful if it extends far beyond the school walls; it should awaken in the student an unquenchable thirst for learning, for knowing, for understanding. I believe this thirst is already present in each and every student. Where some have lost touch with it, I will aid in their reunion; where others have fostered it, I will help them to focus and direct it.
Learning should be a joy. I am committed to the idea that my students experience the profound elation that comes with discovering and mastering one's own mind. In the classroom there should be silence and the sound of turning pages; there should also be laughter, friendship and fun.
Education is for everyone. It is my duty to honor and respect the amazing diversity of my students, and to ensure that each one receives the best possible learning experience. I am committed to knowing my students, to encountering them as individuals, and to finding the specific key that opens for them the door to learning and understanding.
